Welcome to This Week In Sports. We are The Daily’s sports editors, Ells Boone and Zach Zafran, and we’ll be walking you through the major games, events and stories from the past week, as well as providing a brief preview of what’s coming up this week.
No. 13 women’s soccer (2-0, 0-0 Pac-12) continued its unbeaten start to the season, going on the road to take down San Francisco (1-1-1, 0-0-0 WCC) 3-0 on Thursday. Freshman forward Lumi Kostmayer stole the show, finishing the match with two goals and an assist. That assist was put away by junior forward Samantha Williams, who also has enjoyed a brilliant start to the Fall season. The Cardinal have two matches coming up this week. First, a home tilt with UC Santa Barbara (0-2-1, 0-0-0 Big West) at 1 p.m. on Sunday, and then on Thursday, the Penn State Nittany Lions (2-0-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten) come to town for what should be an exciting matchup.
Men’s soccer kicked off its regular season slate with a 1-0 win over Villanova. Sophomore Jackson Kiil provided the game’s only tally, with what was his first career goal. Next up for the team is a rematch with SMU (1-0-0, 0-0-0 American) on Sunday. The Mustangs beat the Cardinal 3-1 last season.
No. 14 Women’s volleyball (2-0, 0-0 Pac-12) road tripped to Nashville, Tenn. this past week and took care of business, sweeping both Lipscomb (0-1, 0-0 ASUN) and Tennessee State (0-1, 0-0 OVC) 3-0. The Cardinal will stay on the road and travel down to the Sunshine state to take on No. 15 Florida (3-0, 0-0 SEC) on Tuesday at 4 p.m. PT.
Stanford field hockey (1-0, 0-0 America East) also got its season started this past week. The Cardinal beat Holy Cross (1-1, 0-0 Patriot) in overtime, 2-1. Seniors Rose Winter and Lynn Vanderstichele got on the scoresheet for Stanford, with Vanderstichele’s goal being the winner. The journey will get tougher, as the team will travel across the country to take on No. 4 Maryland (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) on Monday at 12 p.m.
Last but not least, one of the major storylines of this coming week is the return of college football. Stanford will kick off its season against FCS opponent Colgate, marking the first time the Cardinal have played an FCS team since 2018. Kickoff is set for Saturday, Sep. 3 at 5 p.m. Here at The Daily, we will be rolling out an article each day in preparation for football season. The first one, a spotlight on senior cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly, is out now.
