Cancer center | The new Women’s Cancer Center, directed by School of Medicine professor Jonathan Berek, opens June 27 across the street from the main Stanford Cancer Center on Blake Wilbur Drive. The 13,800-square-foot facility will specialize in breast and gynecologic cancer treatment and research.

Pot to Palo Alto? | Hoover Institution senior fellow Thomas Gale Moore and his wife filed a notice with the City of Palo Alto that they are circulating a petition supporting the legalization of medical-marijuana dispensaries in town. Petitioners have three months to gather 2,178 signatures for the measure to make it on the November ballot and need double that to schedule a special election on the measure. Palo Alto passed an ordinance in 1997 outlawing the operation of dispensaries under its zoning rules.

Energy awards | The U.S. Department of Energy awarded SLAC scientists Markus Guehr and Faya Wang each $2.5 million to be disbursed over the next five years. The “Early Career Research Awards,” which the two received, are given to promising researchers early in their careers. Guehr work will focus on valence electron distribution and electron interaction with nuclei while Wang’s will examine an element of linear accelerator design.
