Letter to the Editor: Reinstating sports

Opinion by Byron Smith

I am disappointed by the University’s decision to reinstate 11 sports programs, as they were right to close those marginal athletics programs.

Stanford’s job is to educate its students. There is no justification for athletics other than the Ancient Greek concept of mens sano in corpore sanum.

College athletics has unfortunately become entertainment media for the mass market. It has little or no relevance to students’ education or welfare. There is no need to fundraise for athletics nor have dozens of teams other than to cater to the mass entertainment media. Please, please revert to the true principles of education.

Yours sincerely,
Byron Swift ’75
