Baseball set for weekday match with Cal Poly

Coming off a weekend series win at Berkeley, No. 2 Stanford baseball (37-9, 19-5 Pac-12) will host the Cal Poly Mustangs (24-5) Tuesday night at Sunken Diamond.

The Cardinal reliably start with a solid pitching staff, fundamental defense and timely hitting. Freshman RHP Alex Williams, who has a 6-1 record and 2.72 ERA, will start.

Stanford’s leading hitters are junior RHP Will Matthiessen (.327) with nine home runs, redshirt junior infielder Duke Kinamon (.314) with six home runs, junior catcher Maverick Handley (.299) with 11 doubles, junior infielder and outfielder Andrew Daschbach (.296) with 11 home runs, junior outfielder and pitcher Kyle Stowers (.290) with 14 doubles and seven home runs and senior outfielder Brandon Wulff (.278) with 16 home runs. This Cardinal team has all the pieces to make this an exciting finish in the 2019 season.

Top pitchers for the Mustangs are senior RHP Michael Clark with a 6-3 record and 2.00 ERA, junior RHP Bobby Ay with a 7-1 record and 3.77 ERA and senior RHP Jarred Zill with a 3.38 ERA.

Offensively, top hitters for the Mustangs are sophomore infielder Tate Samuelson (.301), junior infielder Bradley Beesley (.284), sophomore outfielder Elijah Greene (.274) and redshirt freshman infielder Connor Gurnik (.271). The team has an overall team batting average of .262.

The Cardinal will need to stay sharp in preparation for their big matchup this weekend against Oregon State, as they are currently tied with the Beavers and UCLA for first place in the Pac-12.

First pitch is at 6:05 p.m. PST at Klein Field, Sunken Diamond.
