After recently sweeping Kent State at the weather-shortened Jack Nicklaus Collegiate Invitational, the No. 28 men’s golf team will conclude the fall season this weekend at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational in Alpharetta, Georgia. After nearly a month since their last tournament competition, the No. 6 women’s team continues their season with the annual Stanford Intercollegiate at the Stanford Golf Course this weekend.
The women’s team will face tough competition at home, including No. 2 UCLA, No. 11 Northwestern, No. 13 Arizona State, No. 14 Washington, No. 17 Oklahoma State and several other non-ranked teams.
The 54-hole, three-day tournament is hosted by the Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy Dr. Condoleezza Rice, who served as U.S. Secretary of State under President George W. Bush from 2005-09 and is an avid golfer.
The women’s team is looking to improve upon last year’s second place performance at the tournament. After leading the competition in the first two days, the women fell short to UCLA on the third day of competition.
Individually, current junior Andrea Lee birdied in the final two holes in last year’s tournament to tie for first with UCLA’s Patty Tavantanakit, who became UCLA’s sixth consecutive individual to win the Stanford Intercollegiate. UCLA’s Alison Lee won the tournament in 2013, followed by UCLA’s Bronte Law’s three-peat 2014-2016.
UCLA enters this weekend as the returning champions after winning the last two years. The Cardinal haven’t claimed the title since their back-to-back wins in 2014 and 2015, but they will get another shot at victory starting tomorrow morning at the Stanford Golf Course.
On the men’s team, senior Chris Meyers, Isaiah Salinda and Brandon Wu have been named team captains for this year’s campaigns. The golf season, split between a fall and spring season, will conclude this weekend for the men before returning in February.
Participating in the 13th annual Golf Club of Georgia Invitation this weekend, the men’s team is looking to conclude their fall season with a strong performance in the 54-hole tournament.
“We are eager to get back and finish the fall season off in a strong way,” said Knowles Family Director of Golf Conrad Ray, whose men’s team tied for sixth place in last year’s showing.
Like the women, the men’s squad will be amongst several ranked competitors this weekend, including No. Duke, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 5 Alabama, No. 9 Wake Forest, No. 11 USC, No. 13 Texas and No. 15 Clemson. Of the 14 teams that comprise the field, 11 of them are ranked in the top 50.
Sophomore Nate Menon will lead off for the Cardinal tomorrow morning against Clemson and Duke.
