Stanford women’s track and field was victorious in the 123rd annual Big Meet against longstanding rival Cal, winning 85-74. The men’s team did not have the same luck on Saturday, losing 91-70 at the Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Junior Olivia Baker, one of the Cardinal’s most promising sprinters, had tremendous success this weekend, winning the 100m, 200m and the 4x400m relay. In the relay, Baker kicked passed Cal anchor Rebecca Croft at the final turn of the track. Stanford’s relay win (at a time of 3:41.79) marks its seventh consecutive victory in that event during the Big Meet.
Meanwhile, for the men’s team, senior Jaak Uudmae, freshman Julian Body and juniors Terrence Alexander and Isaiah Brandt-Sims won their 4x100m relay, finishing 40.98 to Cal’s 41.33. Brandt-Sims, a standout sprinter who also plays receiver on the football team, was victorious in his 100m and 200m individual events, and Uudmae won the long and high jumps.
The women’s field competition was lead by the javelin victories of sophomore Mackenzie Little and freshman Jenna Gray. Gray, a three-sport athlete at Stanford, threw 160-9 (49.00) and Little, the reigning Pac-12 champion, threw 171-10 (52.38) to take first.
Junior Lena Giger won the Big Meet shot put with a personal best of 55-5.5 (16.80). Her throw was nine inches over that of her indoor throw during the MPSF championships and put her at No. 3 on Stanford’s all-time performers’ list. She now stands behind Olympians and Stanford Alumni Jillian Camarena and Carol Cady.
In the women’s high jump, junior Rachel Reichenbach also tied her personal best of 5-8 3/4 (1.74).
Moving forward, Stanford will host again in two weeks for the Cardinal Classic on April 21 and 22.
