To pass the time, detainees carved messages and poetry into the walls. Here, Park Ranger Daniel Inouye points to a portion that has been restored after being filled in and painted over by officers to discourage the practice which was seen as vandilism. Still, there is a lot we can learn from these messages, from the living conditions to the demographic of those detained.
