Stanford hospital nurses make tentative deal to avoid strike

May 2, 2016, 12:36 a.m.

Nurses from Stanford Hospitals and Clinics and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital will no longer go on strike, after settling on a deal that – among other concessions – will make them the highest-paid nurses in the Bay Area.

Previously, the Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement (CRONA) had prepared to call a nurses’ strike after an unsuccessful extended mediation session. But last Wednesday, CRONA, Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford reached a tentative agreement on a new contract.

In addition to the wage increases guaranteed by the agreement, the new contract includes improvements in working conditions and new protections for nurses, such as better retirement benefits, new limitations on mandatory on-call time and pre-approved vacation and education time.

While the agreement is not yet official, CRONA has recommended ratification. The tentative deal has been under the review of CRONA since last Thursday. Members of CRONA will vote on Wednesday, May 11, and if the vote is successful, the agreement will be formalized.

“This Tentative Agreement would not have been possible but for the strength, dedication and resolve of the united membership,” said CRONA President Colleen Borges in an email to CRONA nurses. “CRONA Nurses, we should all take great pride in what we are able to achieve when we are united and advocate strongly for our profession!”
