Junior guard Marcus Allen out indefinitely with stress fracture

Oct. 15, 2015, 12:00 a.m.

Head coach Johnny Dawkins announced Monday that junior guard and likely starter Marcus Allen sustained a stress fracture in his right foot and will be out indefinitely as he recovers. A timetable has not yet been set for his recovery.

“First, and foremost, we want to make sure Marcus is fully healthy before returning to the court,” Dawkins said. “We wish him all the best during his recovery period. Marcus played at a high level during our summer exhibition competition in Italy, where he was one of our leading scorers. We will certainly miss him as we continue to prepare for the season, but we are fortunate that this happened now and he will be back before he knows it.”

Though his role was limited, Allen rose to prominence in the Stanford offense as the 2014-15 season progressed, averaging 7.1 points per game in conference play and 11.4 and 5.4 rebounds over the five games in Stanford’s NIT run.

Given the departure of Stanford’s top three scorers from last season (Chasson Randle, Anthony Brown and Stefan Nastic), Allen was presumably expected to be a big part of the offense this year. Coincidentally, some of his playing time may go to his twin brother Malcolm, who is set to come back after redshirting last season due to an early-season injury.

Stanford opens the 2015-16 season at home against Wisconsin-Green Bay on Friday, Nov. 13 at Maples Pavilion.
