Another day, another overtime game for the Cardinal field hockey team — but this time, No. 6 Stanford (6-2, 0-1 America East) wasn’t able to find another late escape and suffered a tough 2-1 overtime loss to Cal (5-3, 1-0 America East) in its conference opener on Friday.

The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Cardinal, who had defeated Cal in seven straight matchups before Friday. It was also Stanford’s first regular-season loss to an unranked team since 2013.

Although Stanford led 1-0 for the majority of the game after an early goal, Cal struck back late with the equalizer and broke through in the first period of overtime with an 81st-minute goal from forward Sydney Earle to complete the upset on the Varsity Turf.

In a first half largely dominated by defense, it was Stanford that struck first with a goal from senior defender Jessica Chisholm. In the 16th minute, Chisholm took a pass off of a penalty corner and shot the ball off of Cal goalkeeper Kori Griswold and into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

However, after Stanford fired off four shots in the first 10 minutes after the break, the Golden Bears continually pressured the Cardinal, with Cal taking 8 penalty corners without yielding any to Stanford while also outshooting the Cardinal 8-6.

Although it was Cal defender Marie Lanckneus that was the beneficiary of all of those penalty corners, tallying 6 shots to lead all players on the pitch, it was Melina Moore that looked to finally come through for Cal on her only shot of the day, when a Lanckneus shot was saved by Davies but rebounded to Moore, who finished for the goal.

However, further review determined that the ball had bounced off of Moore’s foot on the deflection, nullifying the goal and preserving Stanford’s lead.

But with just four minutes remaining in regulation, Cal finally got the break it needed when forward Mara Gutierrez received a penalty corner and netted the equalizer, which was initially ruled to be illegal before it was overturned upon further review.

With the game knotted at one goal apiece, the Golden Bears were the ones to net the decisive goal in overtime, spoiling a strong start to overtime by the Cardinal and a good game from Stanford goalkeeper Dulcie Davies, who notched 7 saves in a losing effort. On the other side, Griswold also snagged 7 saves of her own.

The win marked the second victory over a ranked opponent this season for Cal, which also notched its first win over a top-10 opponent since 2007 by downing the Cardinal.

Stanford will now travel to the East Coast to take on UConn and UMass to begin a stretch of seven consecutive road games.
