History professor George Knoles dies at 107

George Knoles Ph.D. ’39, former Stanford history professor and chair of the history department, passed away this summer at the age of 107, as initially reported in the Stanford Report.

A memorial service will be held on Oct. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Methodist Church at 625 Hamilton Ave. in Palo Alto.

Knoles taught history at Stanford from 1935 to 1972 and led the history department as chairman for 10 years. He was also a member of the Stanford Historical Society.

Outside of Stanford, Knoles is remembered for his teaching in summer college programs across the U.S. and overseas. He was also a Navy officer serving in the Pacific in World War II.

Knoles is survived by his two daughters, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
