New York City program to begin next fall

Sept. 29, 2014, 8:18 p.m.

Next fall, the University will launch Stanford in New York City (SiNYC), an off-campus program in New York City that combines internship experience with coursework in the humanities and social sciences.

Twenty rising juniors and seniors from any academic field will be selected through an application process that opens this December.

Selected students will engage with the surrounding metropolis on a day-to-day basis. Students will work four days a week in internships ranging from cultural institutions to not-for-profit organizations, in addition to taking classes in the arts, design, architecture and urban studies.

“Applying classroom learning to real world problems and situations is a powerful way for students to develop adaptive learning skills,” wrote Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education Harry Elam in an email shared with faculty involved with the program. “SiNYC provides an opportunity for more students to have these experiences, building on strong faculty and student interest in the thematic areas and New York’s unparalleled resources in each of them.”

Doug McAdam, the Ray Lyman Wilbur Professor of Sociology, will also teach two elective courses through the program as the inaugural faculty member in residence.

The University plans to expand the program in following years by adding course offerings in finance and media. SiNYC will also be offered during the first two quarters of the 2016-17 academic year and the first three quarters of the 2017-18 academic year.
