Tennis: Klahn, Barte and Burdette in individual finals

May 30, 2010, 9:17 p.m.

Stanford tennis is well-represented in both the men’s and women’s NCAA Individual Tournaments in Athens, Ga.

Sophomore Bradley Klahn advanced to the singles final by steamrolling No. 1 seed Henrique Cunha of Duke 6-2, 6-2. He will face unseeded Austen Childs of Louisville, who has been somewhat of a Cinderella story. Childs is the first Louisville player to make even the semifinals, and he defeated four players who had beaten him previously on the way to the finals. Klahn and Childs will face off Monday at 11 a.m. PST.

Klahn and classmate Ryan Thacher advanced to the semifinals in the doubles tournament as well, but they were eliminated by Virginia’s Shabaz and Courtney in a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (7).

On the women’s side, Stanford is once again led by its top pair of junior Hilary Barte and senior Lindsay Burdette. The duo has dominated its competition, winning every match by straight sets. This was most evident in the semis, when Barte and Burdette overpowered UCLA’s Andrea Remynse and Yasmin Schnack 6-0, 6-1. The Cardinal duo, ranked second coming into the tournament, will return to the final for the second consecutive year, where it will face the No. 1 pair of Tennessee’s Caitlin Whoriskey and Natalie Pluskota. The match will start at 9 a.m. PST.

Barte nearly had a chance for a singles-doubles sweep, but she lost in the semifinals to Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia 7-6 (6), 6-3.

Live streaming and scores of all matches will be available on the NCAA’s website.
